Focus:
Ocean is the source of life. Since humans knew how to employ the ocean to make a living, throughout human history, human beings are found developing their awareness about the ocean and their contact with the other countries and cultures, as well as building up the relationship and encounters between races, countries and nature. With the age of exploration, men reached beyond their boundaries. The desire to own a piece of land beyond the sea is fulfilled by travels on waters. In the mercantile era, when oceans connected towns and cities on the coasts and weave together networks of seaborne commerce, the building of empire and the formation of diaspora became a part of human collective memory. This book is a collection of essays involved with maritime culture and history. The issues discussed include sea ports, commerce and coastal communities and adventures of heroes crossing the ocean and cultural history of slavery boats.
